Name: Kim Klinikowski
Messsage: Hi, my name's Kim Klinikowski. This year will be my first year at High School, however, I am already starting to look into college. I have had a general idea with where I have wanted to go for quite awhile, but I am wondering what I should work towards throughout High School. The school that I have had my eye on is Columbia University in New York City. I know that they are known to be one of the most selective schools in the country and I am wondering what the qualifications are for most Ivy League schools. I haven't been able to get advice anywhere else, so I was hoping you'd be able to help!
Thank you for your time and I hope this letter is of no inconvience to you! Hopefully you will be able to help me out and get me on the right track towards accomplishing my goals! Take care, Kim Klinikowski.
Response: Dear Kim:
Congratulations for having a goal and for starting to prepare for college now.
Buy a copy of the IntotheBest College Guide. Buy a copy of Getting In. Buy a copy of 1100 Words You Need to Know. Buy Up Your Score: The Underground Guide to the SAT and start practicing for the PSAT.
This summer, make a plan for how to read 1/4 of the books for the list of Books to Read Before College. Finish reading all the books before you start college.
Figure out what you love to do. Get really good at it. Win some local or national competitions by your junior year or the fall of your senior year. Statistically, recruited athletes get into Princeton with a 70% admission rate compared to 11% for regular candidates. So, if you are athletic, pick your favorite sport and become one of the top 1 or 2 people at it in your state or in the country.
Develop a plan for studying for the PSAT during freshman year. You take the PSAT sophomore year for practice. You take the PSAT for the National Merit Scholarship as a junior. In order to get the National Merit Scholarship, you need to have a verbal score and a math score in the top 1% of people your age in the country. That is not hard to do with practice.
Find out from your teachers or guidance counselors where top students from your school go and ask what the students that have gotten into Columbia, Princeton, Harvard, Duke, Brown, and Cornell did when they were in high school.
Contact Columbia and ask for advice from the admissions committee. Ask what the average SAT scores were, what the range of scores was from 25% to 75% and what SAT II scores are required. Find out what classes are required and recommended. Ask when a Columbia representative will be in your town. Attend presentations from Columbia admissions representatives for the next 4 years.
Excel academically. It isn't that hard to do well in school if you study harder than everyone else in the school. Acing exams is fun. Most people don't do their work. Try to be valedictorian if you go to a small school with less than 200 people. In general, you want to be in the top 1% of your class.
Plan to get 750 to 800 on three SAT II and a 1530 or higher on the SAT I. Don't be discouraged if you don't score that high as a sophomore. I got a 1090 on my first PSAT. It made me mad, so I studied harder and improved every year until I got a 1520 recentered senior year.
If possible, spend a year during high school or a year after high school in a foreign country, working, studying, volunteering, and soaking up the language and culture. In the book
Getting In,
Fred Hargadon, former Dean of Admission at Princeton, said that he could admit a whole class of students that lived for 1 year in another country.
The summer before your senior year, buy a copy of On Writing the College Application
Essay and start writing your college application essays.
Have your English teachers and guidance counselors look over your essays.
Keep in touch,
Tim

Messsage: MY ANSWER TO THE SURVEY QUESTION IS THAT THE COMPANY I WOULD START TO HELP PAY FOR COLLEGE WOULD DEAL WITH A FASHION LINE. I AM ATTENDING, HOPEFULLY, IN OCTOBER TO A FASHION DESIGN COLLEGE. I WOULD APPLY MY MAJOR TO HELP PAY FOR MY MAJOR. IT WOULD BE A LINE WITH A UNIVERSAL NAME AND AFFORDABLE PRICES. I WOULD TALK TO THE TEACHERS AND INSTEAD OF HAVING EMPLOYEES, HAVE VOLUNTEERS SO THEY CAN RECEIVE EXTRA CREDIT. I WOULD ALSO MAKE A SECTION OF THE STORE A "SPIRT" LINE FEATURING THE COLLEGE AND THE CITY'S NAME. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.
Response: Dear Katie Germann:
Thank you for your answer. Unfortunately, the deadline was June 30, 2004. Good luck with your fashion company.
I like your idea of getting people to volunteer to help you. You may want to check out CafePress.com for producing some items with your designs. Once you design something, you probably want to get it trade marked so that other people don't steal your design.

Tim

July 8, 2004
Name: Erin Israel
Messsage: Dear Sir or Madam:
I am writing concerning one of the scholarship questions that is posted on your web site. For the high school year of graduation of 2005 the question is \"What would you do if you had 1 million dollars? How would this influence you or others?\".
I realize this is a valid question but I would like to be forthright about my opinion on the matter. This question is ridiculous in the fact that if anyone and everyone had a million dollars they would do what they think will please you, the sponsors, best. No would ever do the jobs that are seen as unimportant, while those jobs are what make a community and, for that mater, our world. Jobs like teaching, garbage colleting, tax colleters, and jantors are vewed as low occupations, while without them out way of living would be destroyed. These low and poorly paid people are what make children of the future millionaires to change the world as they may. So instead of \"What would you do if you had 1 million dollars?\", why not \"What minor people and things make a great contribution and influence to society today? How do they influence you and others?\". Please take this into consideration when deciding on scholarship questions. Questions that provoke more thought than interest would provide more liable scholar worthy participants.
Thank you for you time and the availability to write this letter.
Sincerely,
Erin M. Israel
Response: Dear Erin:
Thanks for your insights. I will consider your question for the future.
Many teachers are millionaires and they choose to teach because they love helping people. Many of the most important jobs go unrecognized or unpaid because they require volunteers to do jobs that they couldn't be paid enough to do.
Best,
Tim

Messsage: To whom it may concern:
Hello. My name is Nicole Miller and I attend Pine Bluff High School in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. I recently submitted an essay for the \"Free Will Scholarship\", and was hoping to inform you that the ad on www.fastweb.com indicates that the essay is to be no more than 100 word, while your site says 100-200 words. I condensed my essay quite a bit because of the first limitation that I ran across on fastweb.com and could have written a stronger essay response if that error had not been. Hopefully what I did include in my essay was enough, for I truly need scholarship money for college. I am definately not being snippy about this, my only intention with this letter was to inform you of the conflicting requirment ads. Thank you for your time. Nicole Miiler
Response: Nicole,
I am aware of the difference.

Tim

Messsage: I am applying for your May 1, 2004 scholarship. When I log on to the website yesterday I got one essay question, and then today when I log on to submit my application, I recieved a totally different essay question. The first question referred to a girl named Madison, and the second question referred to giving a friend advice. I wrote the essay on the first question. Can I still apply?
Response: Hilary,
Yes, you may still apply.
